McMillan & Wife: questions and sourced answers

McMillan & Wife was an American television series that ran as part of the NBC Mystery Movie wheel in the 1970s. It centered on a San Francisco police commissioner and his younger wife, played by Rock Hudson and Susan Saint James, and blended light mystery plots with the couple's domestic life. The series is remembered both for its place in the era's rotating mystery-movie format and for Saint James's performance as Sally McMillan, which brought her an Emmy Award. The public chats collected under this tag tend to spring from moments when the show returns to public attention, most often through news about the people who made it. They explore Susan Saint James's career before, during and after McMillan & Wife, including her later work on Kate & Allie, and they address the questions readers ask when an actor from a beloved older series dies: what she was known for, what awards she won, how she was remembered, and who survived her. Because these conversations touch on a death, they should be read as summaries of reported information and public reaction rather than as authoritative or complete accounts, and readers looking for definitive details will want to consult the sources the chats themselves cite.
